Our Story
Welcome to Bonic Zegrid
by Cecilia and Ingrid
You are here with purpose and beauty!
Thank you for coming to Bonic Zegrid Jewelry. We're Ingrid and Cecilia, mother and daughter, founders of Bonic Zegrid. We are a small women owned and disabled woman business with a heart full of purpose and creativity for women like you. Our beautiful purpose-driven jewelry is made and chosen with care and love. A Bonic Zegrid handmade piece expresses moments of love, perseverance and courage. A reminder that women can create beauty with meaning, purpose, hope, and full of life despite obstacles, disability and struggles.
Our name
Bonic means beautiful is Catalan. Life is beautiful. Zegrid is the combination of my name pronunciation (Ce)but with a Z, and “Grid” the last part of my mother’s name, Ingrid. Our name symbolizes the special and unique bond and unity Mom and daughter share. A name that expresses the connection and journey we have together during the creative process of jewelry making. We are thrilled to share it with other women while impacting the people in our communities.
My mother has shown me how beautiful life can be in the most cruel and oppressive circumstances. She knows in her soul the power of art and a heart that shares with others.
How it all began!
My mother and I fully pursued the making of handmade accessories during the pandemic. What a challenge to undertake in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. But we believe hard times are a good soil for our dreams to bloom. During the pandemic, we continued to work on our dream of creating a family-owned company from scratch to share with women. We started small using what we had and knew from our artistic background and knowledge. We are still learning and will continue because art-making is always a human learning journey. Today, we can share with all of you our creations and all that is to come. Art is our passion. We believe it can impact our humanity in profound and special ways.
While my mother risked her life to serve others during the pandemic, and I taught from home, this dream took full engine. We spent so much time together creating, laughing, overcoming, hoping, planning, and praying it will one day be shared with all of you. And Here WE ARE!
We are driven by love, purpose, and passion to share with you not only our jewelry but so much more that is coming up. We are grateful to God for all the opportunities, resources, and purpose this business is giving us. I, Cecilia as a disabled professional woman and small business owner pledge to share and inspire other disabled women who dream to become independent and included in the professional field.
Disability is Bonic-Beautiful
I, Cecilia as a disabled professional woman know firsthand the struggles we face in a world that is now embracing diversity and inclusion for those who live with a disability. Graduating from a university or owning a business as a woman with a neuromuscular disorder is not your common encounter. One of the values of this jewelry store is to impact and support families with children with disability, and other women with a disability in developing countries. Let me tell you about GRANMA. My abuela (grandma) is one of my greatest inspiration.
My grandmother is the first person in my life to show me that a physical disability is an obstacle but not a maker of one's life. It can happen to any of us. She was the oldest of 12 siblings, had a beautiful family, and was a hard-working woman. She cooked us the best meals on her crutches and wheels chair singing and moving across the kitchen. She loved jewelry and dressing up. My grandmother walked through life with a special shoe because her legs were not even. She is the inspiration for many of the jewelry I have designed and created with my mother. Her name was Gregoria Dora.
Grandma is a testament to my life that disability is hard in a world not built for it, but with courage, love, and support one can face the storm and enjoy the beauty that life has for all of us.
What is Accessible Jewelry?
Have you ever struggled to put on a necklace or close a bracelet. I know from personal experience how my muscles give up on a difficult closure or on any giving day. It can be very frustrated to not be able to put on something you love to wear.
For this reason, we have created and selected accessories that are for all abilities. We will continue to make this a priority in our creative process. We have created many of our handmade necklaces with the option to customize it if you or anyone you know needs it to be adjusted to her abilities. It is important to make jewelry accessible to all of us. We are excited to share many handmade necklaces and bracelets with an accessible closure, and easy to put on. You can see all the accessible jewelry here.
Stay tuned because there is more to come for our accessible jewelry collection.
I graduated in the arts and education field from Florida International University. The beauty of art and creativity has been part of my life since I was a child. I have always loved wearing jewelry, visiting museums, and creating with people. Women can do great things together when moved by love and respect for one another.
At the age of 13, I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a neuromuscular condition that affects all my voluntary muscles. Creating art and making jewelry is an amazing miracle I don't take for granted. The very act of holding the beads to closing a necklace can be exhausting, but it is a gift and a wonderful life experience I enjoy alongside my mother with her support and encouragement.
When you purchase a Bonic Zegrid piece, you wear more than just a beautiful, handmade fashion accessory. You wear a jewelry piece created with love and courage for women like you. This store is proof that disability can be a force for good and hope. By women and for women with purpose inspired by beauty, love and hope. Lear more about our Community Impact and join us!
